Recycling

Hi friends again me 🙂
In this article, I want to talk about the common issue of our bat group, recycling and how it affects carbon footprint. First of all, I have a question for you. We see recycling bins in many places around us. So how often and how accurately do we use them? If I had to give an example from myself, I didn’t have a purpose especially to do recycling. But after this time, I will use recycle bins more often to reduce my carbon footprint and set an example for you. Secondly, I’m going to talk about something we hear all the time. “Plastic”. We all know plastic is a harmful thing. But how much harmful? Is it really important that this plastic harm to the environment? The answer is “YES”. Even 1 percent of the plastics used today cannot be recycled. Moreover, the recycling of 1 plastic bag is much more expensive than producing it. I’m not even gonna talk about damage to your health. You know, it causes cancer. Or I don’t need to tell you how much pollution it causes. Because even plastic was found in the body of whales. It’s time to say “no plastic”. We should encourage the reduction of the use of plastics when we see in our time. Of course, first, we have to start from ourselves. Paper recycling is also very important. I’m an architecture student and you can’t imagine how much paper-based material we use at the studio. If we recycle them properly, imagine how many trees we have saved and how much we can benefit the environment. Now it’s time to reduce our carbon footprint with recycling!

One Week Matters

Before discussing about carbon footprint I was not really aware of how small actions can have a great impact not only on the earth but also on our health. Thus I decided to start changing some habits of mine. And here is a list of all the things that I did last week to reduce my carbon footprint:

  1. Unplugged all my Devices when I was not using them.
  2. I have not eaten meat.
  3. I did not eat fast food and started buying organic food.
  4. I planted cactus and a flower in my room.
  5. I made a shopping list for the whole week so that I will use the bus only once a week.

This may not seem a lot but I am sure that if everyone did the same the world would become better.

How can I reduce my Carbon Footprint?

Hello everyone, I’m Betül
This is my first article on the blog. Today, I want to talk about our carbon footprint. First of all, let me briefly explain what the carbon footprint is. Carbon footprint is a measure of carbon dioxide that damage to the nature caused by human activities. The choices about our food and clothing are polluting the environment If you are not aware of these damages, I will try to raise awareness. I’m a student, so we can reduce our carbon footprint by doing a student’s example during the day. Let’s talk about this. Since my house is close to school, so I can walk to school. Alternatively, bicycles can be used. But if your house is far from your school, please use public transport. Secondly, let’s save electricity, water and natural gas. Our natural gas bill came to 500 TL this month. We are in the student house and we burn a minimum amount of natural gas. But the excess of this bill made us think a lot. And we decided to find a solution. We aim to insulate at home so that there will be a great positive development both financially and for our environment. In addition, I would like to address a problem that I noticed in myself. I have a habit which is using electronic devices into sleep mode and never turns them off. But this is actually a big problem. If you have such a habit, please give up. One of the biggest steps to reducing the carbon footprint is recycling. We always say that “no plastic bags”. We use fabric bags in our house with the girls. I would like to encourage you to use fabric bags or paper bags. let’s calculate your carbon footprint and look for ways to reduce it by observing yourself for a day. We have just 1 world and it is in our hands to live healthier and longer on it, let’s start 🙂

We Throw Our All Old Stuff in the Trash

When I looked my surroundings, I realized that people use their stuff and when they get bored, they put them into the thrash and they get new one. In this way, our carbon footprint getting bigger and we waste lot of resources. If it goes like that, one day we cannot live on earth. Instead of this we can use our things again and again with small changes.

As shown in picture we can use old barrel as a chair instead of throw them in nature.

As you see in this picture, we can use canned as a pencilcase so we save canned and some old newspaper. In this way we can reduce our carbon footprint and we can save sources of world because as we already know resources of world have end. If we don’t do something about that we will have nothing in near future. Thus, if we gain this reusing things as a habbit, we will gain more time to live on earth. We will have a big change with these small changes.

What I Changed in My Life

I used computer about 20 hours in a week. I realized that if I decrease my computer usage, my carbon footprint will decrease too because of energy usage. Then, I decreased my computer usage to 9 hours in a week. It is almost half of last week. After that, I found interesting information which is laptop save 80% of energy when it compare with normal computer. Thus, I use laptop instead of computer.

Then, I thought I eat lot of meat so in this week I tried to eat vegetables and fruits and also tried to eat less food because if we eat just for needs, it will decrease our carbon footprint. If whole world eat just for needs instead of for pleasure, we can finish hunger in whole world.

Recycling Bins

After one week of observing some problems related to recycling in AGU, I have realized that although AGU provides us with recycling bins all over the campus, we still do not use them efficiently. We know that recycling has a good impact on the environment, however, have we ever thought about how the world would be without no one to recycle?! Mountain of garbage all over the world, landfills everywhere. So in this topic, I will talk briefly about two of the most used materials -for us as students- and the environmental impact of not recycling them.

1. Plastic:
Did you know that plastic bottles need 450 years to decompose? Imagine the chaos if everyone -population of 7.7 billion- throws a bottle a day thinking that it is only one bottle!

Moreover, according to a study published in Nature Climate Change: “Recycling all plastic waste would reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (ecological footprint) to 4.9 gigatons in 2050.”

2. paper:
Paper is one of the most consumed materials. Unlike plastic, the paper does not need much time to decompose. However, not recycling paper means that more trees will be chopped down to produce it. And as we all aware of, cutting trees results in Increasing Greenhouse Gases, Loss of Habitat, and many more.

So is it time to start separating your trash yet?!

PROBLEM DEFINITION ABOUT RECYCLE AND UPCYCLE

I had the opportunity to make some observations about recycling and upcycling around me, my family and my school for a week and I realized that there were some problems. First of all, I want to talk about some problems with my family where I live. First of all, my mother is very sensitive about recycling and upcycling, but she collects plastic bottles, bags and waste materials such as paper in one place and throws them directly into the trash. Mom, why do you do that, and if I tell you it’s better if we sort out the trash, she says, “We don’t have so many trash cans,” or what a need, a trash can answer all the trash. On the other hand, my father and brother have no idea about these issues and have no thinking about the importance of recycling and upcycle. So in general, the problem about this issue in our family is not to have enough consciousness.

At school, it is generally not possible to dispose of the garbage in the trash. In other words, although there are separate recycling bins such as paper, glass and plastic, some of the students do not use these bins. They don’t use these boxes, but instead of throwing their trash in the trash, we can find lots of trash on the floor or on the table.

Other than that, some students, including myself, smoke. Instead of throwing it in the trash after the cigarette is finished, some of them throw it on the floor. Cigarette is harmful to both the air and the environment, but at least by throwing them in the trash can reduce the environmental pollution to a little bit, we can reduce the carbon footprint.

In addition, the litter in the student village houses is kept in a single bag unallocated and disposed of directly in the garbage collection vehicle, ie a recyclable material is disposed of directly in the garbage without being recycled.

REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Hello eco-friendly people, my name is Metin and I am writing a blog first time but I will explain my thinking and try to explain about ecological carbon footprint. First example is transportation. Transportation is one of the areas where fossil fuel consumption directly causes carbon emissions. We can make a surprising contribution to nature by renewing our transportation habits. For example, instead of using a car or public transport, I reached home once a week on foot after school. We can reduce our carbon footprint in very simple ways, such as turning off unused appliances in the home, not using electricity unless necessary, and keeping electric water heaters off when not in use. This week I sat down without turning on the lights unless I needed to, and I took the phone charger and laptop charger out after the battery was full.

I also reduced my carbon footprint by eating as much organic and unpackaged food as possible. I didn’t pollute nature by throwing plastic bottles and paper waste into recycling bins instead of throwing them away. I’ve consumed as much food as I need, in moderation. The energy and fuel consumed in the process of reaching the end consumer through long distances increases the carbon footprint of the food, and since I know this, I preferred more local foods.
